story-telling session at the Quezon City Public Library
On December 8, 2012, the University of the Philippines Lingua Franca held a story-telling session with a number of kids at the Quezon City Public Library. With the aim of enriching the minds of the youth not only within the university, the members read their favorite story books with the children in the library. The members, divided into five groups, shared their chosen stories. Two of the books that were read include the famous fairy tale, “Three Little Pigs”, and a Filipino children story entitled “Si Pilandok at ang mga Buwaya”.
After the fun-filled story-telling session, the members interacted with the kids through a “create-your-own-story” activity. The kids, with the help of the members, weaved their own stories onto paper with the use of pencil and crayons. Snacks and drinks were also served while the kids were working on their own stories. The event culminated with the presentation of the stories created by the children. For their hard work, the kids were given coloring books at the end of the event. |

Dear you: Lecture and Paper-Reading sessions on The Perks of Being a WallflowerOn October 2, 2012, the UP Lingua Franca hosted a lecture entitled “Dear You,” which focused on Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Held at the College of Arts and Letters’ Audio-Visual Room, the lecture was put together to coincide with the release of the novel’s film adaptation.
The program of “Dear You” started with the reading of critical papers written by two of the organization’s members: Mr. Franz Edric Bangalan questioned the use of the addressed “friend” as a character representing the reader, while Ms. Alyanna Janine Villa-Real talked about the effect and nature of abuse as seen in the novel’s main characters. The lecture also included a talk headed by Professor Gabriela Lee, who focused on the hipster culture as seen in the novel’s references to numerous songs, movies, TV shows, and books. “Dear You” culminated with a raffle sponsored by Pioneer Films, who provided the organization with movie passes to the film adaptation of the book. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a critically acclaimed young-adult novel written by Stephen Chbosky, which centers around the estranged Charlie and his newfound friends Sam and Patrick. The novel’s film adaptation features Logan Lerman as Charlie, Emma Watson as Sam, and Ezra Miller as Patrick. |

Between You and I
While the world was celebrating the love in the air, UP Lingua Franca had its own good
breathe in as they held Between You and I, a day-long marriage booth that stood along the Tambayan Complex, Faculty Center, last February 14, 2012. Interested couples had the chance to enact their own wedding scene while giving them the option to choose from three “marriage package”. They can choose among an ancient mythology-themed wedding, where they can dress up as the Greek god and goddess, Zeus and Hera; a Medieval-themed wedding where the bride and groom turns into Guinevere and Lancelot themselves; and, a Victorian-themed wedding, where they don the looks of Mr. Darcy and Ms. Bennett from the acclaimed novel, Pride and Prejudice. Each marriage package contains every wedding ceremony conventions: a walk on the aisle, the exchange of vows, and the ring. Couples also had the opportunity to get their pictures taken, sign their marriage certificates, and of course, pick a honeymoon package at random. Everything is in for the price of 80 per registered couple. The couples may voluntarily sign themselves in, or a person may choose to sign in a different couple. Either way, couples who sought something to do in Valentine’s Day definitely found what they were looking for: singing for better or for worst in front of the altar. |

ON TO A NEW DECADE: UP LINGUA FRANCA'S 11TH ANNIVERSARY As an organization, UP Lingua Franca is committed to the goals of achieving academic excellence and producing holistic scholars of language and literature. This June 2007, Lingua Franca will be celebrating eleven years in existence, the theme being, "On To A New Decade: Up Lingua Franca's 11th Anniversary." The week-long celebration will consist of the following events:
FREE HP6 FOR EVERYONE WHO RESERVES HP7 WITH US! Due to popular demand, we will be giving a free copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to EVERYONE who reserves Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with us. For more details about this promo, see the previous post. For reservations, please contact the UP Lingua Franca treasurer, Madi Belen, at 0916-7379513. UPLF TIES UP WITH SCHOLASTIC FOR HP7 PROMO In cooperation with Scholastic Philippines, Lingua Franca will be bringing the seventh installment of the Harry Potter novels to UP Diliman. During the weeks prior to the release ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Lingua Franca will be accepting reservations for those who are interested in purchasing a copy of J.K. Rowling's latest (and perhaps last) literary masterpiece. It is an uncontested fact that since the publication of the first Harry Potter novel, this boy wizard has gone on to become a part of popular culture, seemingly defining children's literature in the way C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia did during his lifetime. As an organization committed to furthering the widespread reach of literature, Lingua Franca has seen fit to ally itself with Scholastic Philippines, the international publisher responsible for bringing the American version of Harry Potter to our homes and our lives. With the release date of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows looming closer and closer, it has to be asked: what is stopping you from getting a copy? As said, Lingua Franca is accepting reservations and to entice reluctant readers, the organization is offering certain benefits that no bookstore across the country could possibly be able to offer. For one, Lingua Franca's reservation fee is half of that which bookstores are asking for--Php 250.00--instead of Php 500.00. Also, the first fifty people who reserve with Lingua Franca will avail of a free copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The copy of this book is hardbound, brand-new and costs more than a thousand pesos when purchased in a bookstore. To make this deal even sweeter to UP Diliman students, Lingua Franca is offering to deliver the books free of charge to students residing within the university dormitories Kalayaan, Sampaguita, Kamia and Molave, on the release date of July 21, 2007. With such benefits, how can you resist? If you can't, here is how you are to reserve with Lingua Franca: During the first week of enrollment, from June 4 to June 8, 2007, proceed to the CAL Organizations' Tambayan Complex behind the Faculty Center. The Lingua Franca tambayanis numbered 9 and boasts at its side a tarp with the organization's name. If you are still confused, all you have to do is go to the Tambayan Complex and there will be Lingua Franca members in the vicinity--they will be more than happy to help. Once there, sign up for reservation by filling out the reservation list and once the reservation fee of Php 250.00 is paid, a numbered claim stub/receipt will be given to you. This numbered claim stub/receipt will be signed by any member of the Executive Committeeof Lingua Franca to validate the exchange. If you arrive early, there is a good chance you will be one of the first fifty to receive a free HP6 book. Lingua Franca may be accepting reservations later than June 4 to 8 but it is still unclear as to this point. It is best you reserve during enrollment week. The full price of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is Php 1,450.00, but that price is the same everywhere. The release date of the book is July 21, 2007 and that is when you will claim your books at the Lingua Franca tambayan. Since the reservation fee is your down payment, you will only have to pay Php. 1,150.00 on July 21. If you were one of the first fifty to reserve, this is also when you will receive your free HP6 book. Let it be made clear that this HP7 promo is available for anyone who is interested and who wishes to take advantage of it. It is not just for students from the College of Arts and Letters. It is not just for students from UP Diliman. If you can make it to the Lingua Franca tambayan on the assigned dates, then you have the chance to reserve an HP7 book. Here are the details to remember about this HP7 promo:
Thank you and Lingua Franca sincerely hopes to introduce you to the latest chapter of Harry Potter's saga. PICTURE YOUR CRUSH You keep them in your minds. Now keep them in your wallets. SEEING RED Sudden Fiction Writing Contest |
